A Century of Sport reveals the great champions - from Joe Louis to Muhammed Ali, WG Grace to Ian Botham, Jesse Owens to Carl Lewis, Pele to Michael Owen - as well as the great teams - Brazil 1970, the Lions 1974, and Manchester United 1999.
The triumphs have also been tempered by tragedies including the Munich Air Disaster, Heysel and Hillsborough, the Israeli fatalaties at the Munich Olympics, 83 killed at Le Mans and the stabbing of Monica Seles.
