Royal Wedding
Stage stars Tom and Ellen Bowen (Fred Astaire and Jane Powell) embark to open their music and dance show in England. Innocent-seeming Ellen is a female Don Juan and doesn’t' take dancing as seriously as Brother Tom; but on shipboard she meets her match, Lord John Brindale (Peter Lawford). After arriving in London, confirmed bachelor Tom auditions and is taken with cool dancer Anne Ashmond (Sarah Churchill). Perils Of Pauline
Fun loving Pearl White (Betty Hutton), working in a garment sweatshop, gets her big chance when she "opens" for a delayed Shakespeare play...with a comic vaudeville performance. Following her brief stage appearance her career leads her into silent movies, becoming queen of the serials. but the consequences of movie stardom may be more than her leading man can take! Enthusiastically ambulating throughout this charming and funny story of silent-film Hollywood, Betty Hutton depicts a myth like Pearl White, framed by fascinating shots of prototypical movie-making. A romantic plot involving Better and her princely co-star, John Lund, is developed in a leisurely fashion until the rather frenetic ending. Hutton's singing is spectacular, as with her opening number, and enjoyment is developed as the viewer identified early stars in this fine example of 40's cinema. "Perils of Pauline" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music / Song by Frank Loesser for the song "I Wish I Didn't Love You So."
Till The Clouds Roll By

Happy Go Lovely
The Edinburgh Festival is the setting for this musical comedy. John Frost is the director of a Broadway style musical. Unfortunately, he has run out of money and the creditors do not want to wait. In desperation he casts a chorus girl in the leading role believing it will get him closer to her boyfriend's fortune. There is just one slight problem; she does not have a millionaire boyfriend! "Happy G Lovely" stars David Niven, Vera-Ellen and Cesar Romero. |
