Airport (1970) A beleagured manager must keep his blizzard torn international airport open to rescue a bomb-damaged jetliner. One of the original "disaster" movies, this all-star nail-biter follows a series of emergencies at a large Midwestern airport on a snowy night. The weather's bad enough, but then a passenger threatens to blow up an inbound plane. Based on Arthur Hailey's novel. Sequels include Airport 1975, Airport '77 and The Concorde - Airport '79 and dozens of other catastrophe epics built from the same blueprint. Academy Award Nominations: 10, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress--Helen Hayes.
Airport 1975 (1975) En route from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles, Columbia Airlines Flight 409 is struck by a small plane leaving its pilot blinded and the co-pilot dead. In this sequel to the well-received AIRPORT, a small private plane crashes into a 747 in flight. Most of the crew is destroyed by the crash, but one flight attendant steps up to act as a pilot. Can she safely land the plane before an even greater disaster occurs? Like its predecessor, this film features an impressive list of stars, and earned its place in the catastrophe-film genre.
Airport'77 (1977) A 747 full of VIPs and art treasures goes down during a hijack attempt and is trapped underwater in the Bermuda Triangle. In this entry in the AIRPORT diaster-film franchise, a jumbo jet crashes into the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. As the plane becomes submerged, all the passengers aboard must find some way out. Like its predecessors, this film features an array of well-known actors. Academy Award Nominations: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design.
The Concorde: Airport'79 (1979) The last of the diaster Airport series. In this installment in the AIRPORT disaster-film franchise, a passenger jet becomes a target for terror when one passenger carrying secret documents is the subject of a murder plot. As Joe Patroni negotiates with the French Air Force, he also must figure out how to keep the plane from crashing in the Alps! |
